When there is disease of the respiratory track either in one or both the lungs it is called as Pneumonia.It can be cased due to a lot of things like virus, bacteria, fungi etc. In general the illness causing organisms are present in the air.The mico-organisms gets transferred into the blood stream of the lungs when a person breathes.As a result of this the protein outflow in the alveoli gets reduced having a negative impact on the movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide.Slowly the mucous production in the alveoli increases resulting in debris formation inside it.It again become hard over a period of time.

A person suffers from cold and high fever associated with high temperature.One even has cough along with tarred or blood like sputum.The patient also experiences shortness of breath followed by clammy skin.There is chest pain that becomes worst with deep breathing.Other associated symptoms are headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bodyache, fatigue and lethargy.

New Inhaler Drug Approved By FDA For Chronic COPD

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has just announced the approval of a form of new long-term treatment for patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The new treatment is an inhaler drug called Breo Ellipta (fluticasone furoate and vilanterol inhalation powder). It is also approved for the treatment of exacerbations in COPD patients.

COPD is a form of lung disease that progressively gets worse, it is characterized by the occurrence of chronic bronchitis oremphysema (a pair of co-existing diseases that narrow the airways). Symptoms include shortness of breath, chronic cough, chest tightness and excessive phlegm. COPD is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute reported that it is the third leading cause of death in the U.S.

According to a previous study published in PLoS Med, by 2030 COPD is predicted to become the fourth leading cause of death. 

Current and former long-term smokers are at the highest risk of developing COPD. A study published in the journal Thorax revealed that smokers have a 25% chance of developing COPD.

Management strategies of the disease include: quitting smoking (among smokers), vaccination and drug therapies (usually involving the use of inhalers). Two years ago the FDA approved a similar form of treatment to Breo Ellipta called Arcapta Neohaler (indacaterol inhalation powder)for the long term, once-daily maintenance bronchodilator treatment of airflow obstruction in people with COPD.

According to Curtis Rosebraugh, M.D., M.P.H., director, Office of Drug Evaluation II, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, FDA:

“COPD is a serious disease that makes breathing difficult. The availability of new long-term maintenance medications provides additional treatment options for the millions of Americans who suffer with COPD.”

The new inhaler, developed by GlaxoSmithKline, works by reducing inflammation in the lungs as well as relaxing the muscles around the airways, which improves airflow and prevents wheezing and breathlessness.

Breo Ellipta is a combination of two different drugs: fluticasone furoate, an inhaled corticosteroid, and vilanterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA).

Researchers evaluated the effectiveness of the inhaler in 7,700 people who were diagnosed with COPD. 

The results of the study indicated that, compared to placebo, Breo Ellipta was very effective at improving lung function and reducing exacerbations. 

Breo Ellipta is not approved for the treatment of asthma. In fact, as a LABA, the drug’s box label will include a warning that it can increase the risk of asthma-related death. In addition, the medication is not recommended for people under the age of 18 and should not be used as a rescue therapy to treat sudden breathing complications. 

Side effects linked to Breo Ellipta therapy include:

Increased risk of pneumonia

Bone fractures

Headache

Inflammation of the nasal passage

Thrush

Upper respiratory tract infection

The future of COPD management

Recently, researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine identified a genetic signature for COPD from harvested airway cells. The finding has huge potential for new treatment options and provides a novel way to study the condition. One of the senior authors of the study, Avrum Spira, MD, MSc, Alexander said: “Our data shows that there are consistent gene-expression changes that occur in both airway and lung tissue cells in individuals with COPD.”

She added:

“Part of the COPD ‘signature’ reverses with therapy, suggesting that examining airway cells might be a minimally invasive tool for monitoring the disease and evaluating the response to therapy more quickly in order to determine the best course of treatment for each individual patient.”

Another study, published in the April 2013 issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine, revealed that earlier diagnosis of COPD could be achieved using a novel technique known as in vivo ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) 

imaging.

Asthma can be controlled - Tips offered during asthma awareness month

AUGUSTA – Asthma is a chronic disease that affects the lungs, leading to breathing problems including coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and trouble sleeping. In most cases, the cause is unknown and there is no known cure.

In Maine, more than 22,000 children and over 100,000 adults currently have asthma, which places Maine in the top 10 states when comparing adult asthma rates. In 2009,there were 14 deaths, 1,169 hospitalizations and 8,482 emergency department visits due to asthma, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office of Data, Research and Vital Statistics.

Asthma attacks occur when something bothers the lungs and causes sudden breathing problems. These are known as ‘asthma triggers’ and some of the more common ones are tobacco smoke, outdoor air pollution, mold, cleaning agents, dust mites and strong smells from perfumes and colognes.
Asthma can be controlled and treated. National guidelines include using medication as prescribed – not just when experiencing symptoms; knowing how to avoid asthma triggers; working with a physician or healthcare provider to design a written asthma action plan; making two visits to a physician each year for routine asthma care; and getting an annual flu shot.

An asthma action plan gives instructions on what medicine to use and how often, as wells as what to do if symptoms get worse. The plan is especially important for children to have a plan available at home and at school. School nurses, coaches and school administrators rely on the asthma action plan when a student has an asthma attack. Following these treatment guidelines will help avoid unnecessary and costly emergency department visits and hospitalizations, and missed work or school days.

There is evidence that adults with asthma are more susceptible to invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), which includes pneumonia, meningitis and other diseases. Vaccines for children and adults are available which are effective at preventing severe disease, hospitalization and death from IPD. Ask your health care provider for information about these vaccines.

Antihistamines for the Treatment of Allergic...

All four of the second-generation antihistamines can be given to children. Zyrtec and Clarinex can be used for children as young as six months of age, and Allegra and Claritin for children as young as two years old with allergic rhinitis. Allegra is also indicated to treat hives in children as young as six months of age, and therefore is likely to be safe for children with allergies as well.

So, while the second-generation antihistamines can be used for children, the best antihistamine is the one which best treats the child’s allergy symptoms without causing significant sedation. The studies discussed above, while performed in adults, likely apply to children as well.

Using antihistamines, other any medication for that matter, in pregnancy, involves a careful consideration of the risks and benefits of taking the medication.
